Explain Life of Pi quote?

When I read this book, I copied this quote done and added it to one of my all time favorites list. The narrator is just saying that religion is stupid and we shouldn't limit ourselves to one belief. Religions intersect each other beliefs and are actually similar in nature. Instead of saying "this religion is better than that one," people should instead respect all religions.
