How does a Carbon monoxide alarm work?

I never heard of a Carbon monoxide alarm before until my sister came home with one yesterday. I was just wondering how it works? if Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and whatever else how can you get it in a house what does it come from? I'm clueless about it. I spent most of science cl in school asleep.
